How To Build Every Trap In Sons Of The Forest

Protect you and your partners with these useful tools.

You may downplay the value of traps in Sons of the Forest under the impression that Kelvin and Virginia will walk right through your Fly Swatter Traps; however, this is no longer the case, thanks to updates. Every day enemies become stronger and more numerous on the island's surface. Traps are a way to rid the vermin that tread upon your land and prove an excellent food source, especially in Winter when animals are scarce.

Endnight Games did not hold back when redesigning the enemies of Sons of the Forest. The cannibals and mutants are deadlier than ever. Luckily, you will have an array of weapons and traps to fight back the creepy creatures of Site B.

Tips

Fly Swatter Trap

Sticks x10

A wall of sharp sticks swats the cannibal like a fly severing Limbs and killing a regular cannibal instantly. However, it can only kill one cannibal at a time.

The Fly Swatter Trap must be placed on level ground but can be reset quickly after each use.

Rocks x3

Rope x1

The Fly Swatter Trap is a good alternative to the Bone Maker Trap if you are low on Vodka Bottles.

Spring Trap

Turtle Shell x1

Enemies that stand on the Spring Trap are launched into the air and are killed instantly.

The Spring Trap's small size allows you to set it no matter the elevation. Additionally, it can be picked up, allowing you to use it as a mobile trap.

Sticks x7

Wire x2

Searching for Turtle Shells along the beach can be time-consuming as they do not have fixed spawn locations.

Bone Maker Trap

Sticks x2

Immobilizes cannibals by picking them up by the neck, then burns them to death, leaving a pile of bones on the ground.

A great source of early game bones to craft Bone Armor which is extremely useful when playing on Hard Difficulty. You won't need a Vodka Bottle to reset the Bone Maker Trap.

Rocks x3

Leaves x3

Vodka Bottle x1

Rope x1

Mutants, Titans, and Brutes cannot be trapped.

Fire can spread to nearby enemies dealing damage to multiple targets.

Fish Trap

Sticks x25

Traps a fish that swims too close.

For the best results, place the Fish Trap within a deep pond or lake, as fish are less likely to spawn in shallow bodies of water. The trap can only be used in rivers during winter.

Kelvin is much quicker at catching fish.

Small Animal Trap

Sticks x14

Catches a small animal like squirrels, rabbits, and lizards.

An excellent source of Raw Meat; however, we recommend building multiple traps to get the full benefits of this food source since you can only catch one animal at a time.

Less effective in winter and is best set up near ponds and lakes.

Bird Trap

Sticks x 1

Attracts birds to spawn.

To build the Bird Trap place a stick vertically in the ground, followed by placing a skull on top.

Skulls x1

Scares off, Cannibals.

Better than the Bird Box for gathering feathers. You can't rely on the Bird Trap to scare off every type of cannibal.

Deadfall Trap

Sticks x1

The Deadfall Trap drops a log on an enemy with the force of a falling tree, killing most enemies in one hit.

The Deadfall Trap is easily set up by placing a stick vertically in the ground and a log horizontally on top. However, resetting the trap requires you to rebuild it, meaning you're less likely to get multiple uses out of it in a base siege.

Logs x1

The player and companions can spring the Deadfall Trap.

Spike Wall

Sticks x1

Defensive spikes that deal damage on contact and can potentially one-shot-kill and sever limbs.

To build the Spike Wall, place a stick in the ground and chop the top with an axe in the direction you want it to face. You can then reinforce the spike with three rocks.

Rocks x3

The more spikes you place, the more damage you will deal to enemies. Building spikes on one horizontal log will elevate the spikes to head height. Moreover, enemies, especially mutants, will likely be knocked back into another trap.

Spikes can be clipped through walls and structures by chopping the stick top in the direction of the structure.

This is a sandbox survival game with a splash of linear elements for the sake of the narrative. As a result, you can choose to build your base wherever you like. Moreover, the free-form building allows you to construct shelters to utilize your surroundings best. You could build a base on a cliff's edge eliminating the number of approaches to your shelter. Or you could build on an island within a lake for extra defense.

Many building possibilities mean that you must consider a few factors before setting up your traps:

All traps excluding the Spike Wall, must be reset after being activated, meaning you may want to consider how accessible they are to reach. Generally, traps around your base's perimeter can be reset multiple times during a fight.

Blueprint Traps are traps built from the Survival Handbook; however, Sons of the Forest introduced free-form building, a departure from The Forest that allows for more elaborate designs. There are few instructions on how to build free-form structures in the Survival Handbook.

Because they are not entirely a complete structure but rather a combination of materials, DIY Traps aren't guaranteed to work a hundred percent of the time.

Deciding which trap to go for can leave you scratching your head. However, there are a few differences between the two that you should consider when placing either of these trap types:

In this game, Seasons change every five days on Normal mode and every ten days on Hard Mode, meaning that the effectiveness of Fish Traps and Small Animal Traps depends on the number of animals and fish available.

However, as a whole, these types of traps are not worth the resources and time. Fish Traps only catch one fish at a time; Kelvin can be ordered to catch fish while you work on more critical objectives during any season, with Winter being the less fruitful.
